In preparation for Marvel’s release Fantastic Four: First StepsMuch of the discussion focused on cultural war issues. The main one was the film’s decision to make a silver surfer a woman when people are used to being a surfer.
One side claimed that making the surfer a woman was just more Dei Panding and a convinced sign that the film was creative bankrupt. The other half claimed that they wanted to dance more and were excited to see another who used to be a man’s hero in a full girl. Both sides were wrong.
Once you have seen the movie, the silver surfing changes for gender makes sense. It is clear that, for the reasons for narrative, they replaced the surfer as a woman. This was done to not fill a motivated quota of ESG results, but because it made the film’s scenario better.
If there is one thing you can point to why modern movies are lower than even the recent past work, it’s writing. Hollywood has sabotaged her ability to create decent scripts, creating content with motivation, which is not a good narrative. But not this time.
The silver surfer (Julia Garner), as she became a woman, allowed the film to give Johnny Storm (Joseph Quin) Something to do except to run around to light things. This is an essential part of his character and personality development. It gives the Surfer a connection with one of our heroes, a significant motivation that it would not be if it was a man.

One of Johnny Storm’s main character traits has always been that he is a kind of lady man. So, making a silver surfer an attractive woman, these existing features become appropriate not only for Johnny’s character but also for the story.
Johnny attracted her, which motivates her to give her a chance when other members of Fantastic Four won’t do it. He plans to try and understand what she is, maybe even save her. This Johnny’s decision leads to a link between a human torch and a silver surfer that would not have existed if the surfer was a man.
After all, this connection is saved by all the planets, this attractiveness between them. Johnny awakens the silver surfer of humanity, causing her to lower his final impact against Galactica and send her to violate.
The decision on gender shift silver surfers is one of the best narrative decisions in the film. It’s not the heart of the movie or something else, but it’s the smartest who writes the movie. It is noteworthy in a modern world where script writing is a lost art, and most of what we look at is regurgitated waste that is squeezed on the keyboard by some unskilled idiot, more interested in marketing and social engineering than a good story.
It is surprising that Wonder took off it. The film scenario has four different credited writers, and the committee scenario rarely makes good decisions.
